Good to know

Birch Cottage sits at the centre of Lackan Cottage Farm, a rural six acre organic smallholding in the heart of the South Down countryside, the home of Steve, Claire and Lyra Golemboski-Byrne. Here we grow our own vegetables, fruit and herbs, keep chickens for eggs, and generate all our own electricity. Our wish is to share the experience of that lifestyle with as many people as possible, and Birch Cottage self catering is an opportunity to do just that. Sleeps 2 – 1 Superking bed or 2 singles. Eco friendly finishes throughout. Heating and hot water is provided by solar panels which power the underfloor heating, supplemented by a cosy woodburner if necessary. Check in - from 5pm and Check out by 10am The entire farm, including the cottage is off grid - powered entirely by renewable energy on site. We also have our own private woodland for fuel and newly planted willow plantations for basketry and sculpture. We keep two horses on site, which is also home to four cats and sometimes chickens. We also grow plenty of fruit and vegetables, and will let guests know if any are available. The cottage has wifi, but no TV. ****We are unable to accommodate children or pets**** Things to do: Enjoy the covered fire pit area, which has hammocks, comfy seating, lighting, and plenty of firewood. Take a stroll around our woodland/ There are many walks starting from the end of our lane including through Lackan Bog ASSI (which we own a small part of), and which is home to many dragonfly species. We are close to Tollymore and Castlewellan forest parks, Mourne Mountains and the sea. There are lots of maps and guides in the cottage for walking and cycling, and a large rack of many activities from pony trekking to mountain biking to local history such as the Bronte family trail. There are also bird, animal and plant identification books if you spot something interesting. Tourist Board approved 4* accommodation. Green Tourism Gold rated/

Couldn’t recommend staying at the cottage more! We loved our 2 night stay, the cottage itself and the surrounding woods feel really magical. Great location to explore the Mournes and surrounding areas. Lovely wee touches in the interior and is really well done. Thank you Claire!

We had a lovely and all too brief stay at Claire and Steve's cosy cottage. We were very comfortable and loved the little woodland hammock, fire pit area. We also really enjoyed learning about the incredible work Claire and Steve do to live sustainably. We also loved meeting the gorgeous animals! Highly recommend!

Claires home was a place of calm in a busy world. With her horses in the field next door to the private woods and the log fire, this is a tiny home where you can relax, with all the amenities to make yourself feel at home.

The cottage is even cozier and tastefully decorated than the pictures show. For anyone looking for a nature gateway from the city life, you’ll be delighted. My personal highlights were cooking a nice dinner after hiking during the day and winding down with a book in front of the fireplace. As a bonus, my partner had fun playing the guitar that comes with the place :)

Find us

The farm and cottages are situated up a private laneway. We have ample parking on site, and Birch Cottage has it's own space beside it, marked 81. The nearest towns are Rathfriland, approximately 5 miles and Castlewellan, approximately six miles. A car is pretty essential as we are in a rural setting but visitors come here to get away from it all.
